BIOGRAPHY

Sonia Payes is a conceptual artist working with photography, multi-media, animation and sculpture, who lives and works in Melbourne, Australia. A strong environmental narrative permeates Payes’ works and the cycle of re-creation is explored in her wildly dystopian landscapes and portraits.

Payes has exhibited in public and private galleries and museums nationally and internationally, as well as participated in Art Fairs, most recently 2019 Sydney Contemporary, Carriageworks, NSW.

In 2016 Payes held a major solo exhibition at McClelland Sculpture Park + Gallery, Parallel Futures, as the recipient of the MAP14 Prize for sculpture. In  2017, she exhibited a solo exhibition at the Monash Gallery of Art, Melbourne, Australians In PNG.  Selected group exhibitions include, Sculpture By The Sea, Bondi, NSW and Cottesloe, W.A; White Nights Melbourne, Vic; Lorne Sculpture Biennale, Victoria; L’Oreal Fashion Week, Glen Eira City Council Gallery, Melbourne; Fabrik Expo, Los Angeles; London Art Fair, Olympia Exhibition Centre, London; Willow Studios, Los Angeles; BOMA Shipping Container Gallery, Queensland; Queensland Centre for Photography, Brisbane; Centre for Contemporary Photography, Melbourne; Queens Wharf, Auckland; Melbourne Art Fair, Melbourne; ACAF, Hong Kong; Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Centre, Shanghai; John Curtin Access Gallery, Perth; Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery, University of Western Australia.

In 2017, Payes’ artist monograph, Transformations: The Art of Sonia Payes, by Dr. Ashley Crawford, Thames & Hudson, was launched, and in 2007, Macmillan Art Publishing launched, UNTITLED.Portraits of Australian Artists on 60 Australian artists photographed by Payes, at the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne. Payes’ work is represented in numerous public galleries Australia, and prestigious private collections in Australia, Shanghai, Beijing, Switzerland, Belgium and United States of America.

Payes was the recipient of the 2019 NOW Contemporary art prize held at Shoalhaven Art Gallery, NSW.
